Meet Surf the 10 month old Labrador
This girl is so sweet and really does just want to be with you and in your company, she is the most beautiful girl, with such a sweet nature. However, she is also a total whirlwind! She definitely is a dog who needs a dedicated dog person, whose life is with and for their dogs, not just ‘owns a dog’….
Surf is looking for a calm but active home, a home that will give her plenty of time to settle in and find her feet, a home that will encourage brain work, as well as give plenty of exercise.
Surf would love a ‘job’, whether that be agility, hoopers, scentwork, mantrailing, canicross or gundog for fun. She is NOT a stay at home dog, she loves to be active, and enjoys being out and about getting stimulation from a variety of places.
Surf can be left in her crate happily for up to 4 hours, however new owners will need to work towards this, and expect her to need time to embed this in a new home.
Surf will need ongoing training, time, patience, consistency and boundaries in her new home to allow her to be the best possible dog (We think she is pretty amazing already!)
Surf LOVES water, more than anything in the world. She doesn’t care if it’s a muddy swamp, puddle, lake or pool, if it’s accessible, she WILL be in! So, if you don’t like wet muddy dogs, she isn’t for you! Her favourite thing to do is swim, and she would swim for hours if given the opportunity. Surf also loves a game of tuggy, this has been used as a reinforcement toy for recall during her foster stay. Her lead walking is improving every day, but this will need to be reinforced in her new home also.
Being a typical labrador Surf always has something in her mouth, she loves to carry things around, including shoes! She is learning to swap undesirable items for toys or treats, and will now bring things to you rather than run away (most of the time )
Surf currently lives with 3 dogs and 2 cats in foster. She is learning that cats have teeth and claws, so you better stay away! And that dogs will tell you off if you’re rude! Surf does get a little carried away with some dogs, but does listen if they tell her she’s being too much. She’s coming on in leaps and bounds each day
Surf will come with a 1-2-1 training session, as well as ongoing support.
Good points;
Dog friendly – could live with an older, well balanced, friendly dog, who isn’t bowled over by playing and wants to join in, but also has the confidence to stop games once they’ve had enough.
LOVES people – could live with dog savy children, who are robust as she is very excitable and does jump up still at the moment.
Very affectionate – Surf thinks she’s a lap dog
SUPER smart! – this girl learns very quickly, the good and the bad, and will definitely need plenty of mental stimulation.
Surf is a super fit and healthy dog, she needs an active outdoorsy home, who want to pursue outdoor activities, not do minimal walks.
Knows commands – Sit, down, find it, leave it, paw and has done a little scentwork
Areas to work on and acknowledge:
Will chase cats outdoors and very interested in cats indoors,
Can be destructive if left unattended/uncrated as per working dog puppy behaviours.
Will counter surf or steal anything if opportunity presented to her.
Really struggles to self settle – her crate is her safe space and off switch, and training done to date needs to be continued.
Recall continues to need work to establish the desire to overrule other exciting things and become the person she desires above everything else.
Needs further work to establish loose lead walking, as still puppyish and can be strong on lead, handler needs to be confident and physically able to manage her.
Surf is currently in foster in Biggleswade Bedfordshire. If you are interested in this cheeky, silly, lovable pup, please fill out this form.
